The Backhouse
Salisbury House for an Angelman Family

Billy’s first project in sole practice was this modest home in suburban Salisbury, designed for his nephew who has Angelman Syndrome. The brief was to create a home that blended in with the neighbourhood, but was customised to the unique needs for Tim and the rest of the family.

The response meant that the Kitchen had to be in the heart of the home, providing passive surveillance, but also fitted with sliding gates for Tim’s safety. Bedrooms are compact but grouped together in a bank - the idea being that the family would very much live, breathe, and confront Timmy’s challenges together. The Living/Dining spaces are open-plan, with ample ventilation provided by clerestorey windows, and direct views to the rear yard.

Half a decade on, it’s pleasing to see the family continue to grow and thrive. We’ve recently completed a small patio and pool addition to the rear of the yard, and look forward to seeing the home evolve over time as its use ebbs and flows in response to Tim and the family’s needs.
