Carindale Renovation and Extension

The 90’s saw the emergence of luxury McMansion-type houses in many parts of our city. Our involvement in this project actually started as a Master Retreat exercise (involving the Master Bedroom, Bathroom and WIR) - and eventually became the full challenge of renewing the entire home.

The existing home, while well built, had a cluttered and illogical layout, topped off with “interesting” detailing and a stairway-to-nowhere.

Our clients, however, were committed to sustainability and wanted to work within the existing fabric of the home. We decided to reorient the home towards generous daylight and mountain views to the North (in this case, facing the streetscape) - converting the existing Garage into entertaining space, moving the Kitchen to a central area, and creating a more logical sequence of spaces on the Ground Floor. On the First Floor, we activated the front balcony by redesigning the stairs and the void. We also took the opportunity to renew all rooms and wet areas within.

The visitor now enters into a generous, daylight-filled Front Patio with swimming pool - encountering generous hospitality immediately, rather than having to step into the shaded rear of the home.

As the project nears completion, we are pleased to see and experience the transformation from within the home. We look forward to sharing project photography once the project is complete.

The easy approach may have been to demolish the entire home and start from scratch. This project proves that a targeted and intentional renovation project can make a lasting difference, uplifting a tired and cluttered old home for contemporary family living, but also extending the life of a property for decades to come.
